01 · Your first PDF
- Open a conversation.
Go to ChatGPT and open the chat you want to keep. Wait for the answer to finish generating. Keep this tab open while the export is being prepared and transferred.
- Open the export options.
Click the floating Save as PDF button. You can also click the extension’s Chrome toolbar icon, then Save conversation as PDF.
- Choose content and appearance.
For a first export, use Entire conversation, Clean Document, and your preferred paper size. Keep Images enabled if the conversation contains pictures.
- Click Prepare preview.
The extension scrolls through the conversation to discover available messages, captures their content, and restores the starting scroll position.
- Review Conversation ready.
Check the included-message count and any warnings. Click Open print preview to view the formatted document in a new tab.
- Save the PDF.
Click Print / Save PDF. In Chrome’s print dialog, choose Save as PDF, inspect the final pages, then click Save and choose a filename and folder.
Two previews serve different purposes. The extension preview shows the content and styling. Chrome’s print preview shows the exact page breaks, page count, and running headers and footers.
02 · Install Scriptilux PDF
- Open the Scriptilux PDF listing in the Chrome Web Store.
- Click Add to Chrome and confirm the extension installation.
- Open or refresh your conversation on chatgpt.com.
- Open Chrome’s Extensions menu (the puzzle-piece icon) and pin Scriptilux PDF if you want quick toolbar access.
Scriptilux PDF requires Chrome 131 or newer. You use your normal ChatGPT session; the extension does not need a separate account.
Optional keyboard shortcut
Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts in Chrome and assign a shortcut to Save current ChatGPT conversation as PDF. No default shortcut is imposed.
After an extension update
Chrome normally manages Web Store updates. Refresh your ChatGPT tab after an update, then start a fresh export. This guide describes the features documented in version 1.0.9.
03 · Choose your content
Use the Content menu in Export options.
| Option | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Entire conversation | All messages discovered in the current conversation branch. |
| Selected messages | Only the messages you select. Useful for collecting a few explanations or a specific exchange. |
| From message onward | Messages from a chosen starting message through the discovered end. You can refine the selection after preparation. |
| Current answer only | The latest discovered assistant answer. This does not mean whichever answer happens to be visible on screen. |
| User messages only | Your questions and their captured attachments. |
| Assistant messages only | Assistant answers and their captured content. |
Select messages or a range
The first selection list shows messages currently loaded on the page. Use checkboxes, search, All, None, Invert, Users, Assistants, or a numeric range.
After Prepare preview, selected and from-message exports show Choose captured messages. This second list includes discovered history that may no longer be visible in the chat. Adjust the selection, use Select range or From here onward if helpful, then click Use selected messages.
Search filters the visible selection rows. It does not automatically select search results or clear earlier selections. Review the final included-message count.
04 · Preparation and review
ChatGPT may load only part of a long conversation at a time. The extension checks earlier and later messages, keeps captured content as messages unload, and looks for a stable result. Automatic scrolling during preparation is expected.
- Cancel stops the current export and restores scrolling.
- Use captured messages ends discovery early and lets you review the content already captured. The result is marked potentially incomplete.
- Copy diagnostics copies structural counts and loading measurements that can help investigate a problem.
When Conversation ready appears, review the included-message count, content counts, and notices. The page estimate at this stage is based on text alone; pictures and layout can increase the actual page count.
A stable scan is not proof of all server-side history. The extension exports what the current page exposes. Hidden branches, inaccessible history, collapsed content, or an answer still being generated can limit the result. Expand content you need, wait for generation to finish, and inspect the preview.
A message with no readable body stops the export rather than silently producing a question-only document. Images that cannot be captured use labeled placeholders.

05 · Themes and page layout
Clean Document
A clear default layout with readable text and simple speaker separators.
Chat Style
Adds a shaded treatment to your questions, preserving a conversational feel.
Compact
Tighter line spacing and message spacing for denser reference documents.
Academic
A serif reading style with comfortable spacing for longer explanations.
| Control | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Paper | Choose A4, US Letter, or US Legal. Match the paper size in Chrome’s print dialog. |
| Orientation | Portrait suits most conversations. Landscape gives wide equations, code, and tables more room. |
| Margins | Narrow: 10 mm. Normal: 18 mm. Wide: 25 mm. Custom: enter 8–40 mm; the value applies when Custom is selected. |
| Body font size (pt) | Choose 6–24 pt. Small, Normal, and Large buttons set 9, 11, and 13 pt respectively. |
| Code font size (pt) | Set code separately from body text, within 6–24 pt. |
To change styling after seeing the preview, return to the chat and prepare a new export with the revised options.
06 · Math, code, and tables
Mathematical content
Supported equations are typeset from the mathematical source available in the conversation. Inline formulas stay with the paragraph; displayed equations appear as separate blocks. Wide formulas may be scaled to fit.
For a dense mathematical conversation, try Academic or Clean Document. Use landscape if large matrices or long equations are difficult to read. Inspect any scaling or unsupported-math notices.
Code
Expand Document details and advanced options to control syntax highlighting, line numbers, and long lines.
| Code lines | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Wrap long lines | Fits long lines to the page width. Line numbers are hidden in this mode because a source line may wrap onto several printed lines. |
| Preserve and shrink | Retains source line breaks and reduces code type size as needed, down to 6 pt. Very wide code still needs review. |
| Preserve (clipping warning) | Retains line breaks and the chosen code size. Long lines can be clipped; inspect the warning and print preview before saving. |
Tables
Choose Wrap cells or Reduce type and wrap under Wide tables. Table headers repeat when a table spans printed pages. For many columns, landscape is often easier to read.
Native conversation text is searchable/selectable in the PDF. Text inside an image remains part of the image; the extension does not perform OCR. Supported visible maps and graphics can use static snapshots. Unsupported or clipped visuals and unavailable mathematical source still require labeled fallbacks.
07 · Pasted and other images
Enable Images under Document details and advanced options. The extension includes accessible images in answers and pasted or uploaded images attached to your questions, including attachments placed outside the question bubble.
Maps and response photos
Keep Include maps and web-image snapshots enabled in Export defaults. Start from the Scriptilux PDF browser toolbar icon (pin it through the puzzle-piece menu), or use your assigned extension shortcut. This grants temporary permission to capture visible visuals. The floating Save as PDF button alone cannot grant that permission.
Keep ChatGPT as the active tab while preparation runs. The extension prefers readable original images; otherwise it can include a cropped snapshot of a visible photo, map, or supported graphic. Export controls briefly disappear during each snapshot. Maps are static and retain their displayed view. Hidden carousel items, offscreen map areas, and extra detail absent from the displayed image cannot be recovered.
If a visual is clipped or too large to fit on screen, enlarge the browser window and retry. The extension reports missing images instead of silently saving a partial crop. Turn off the snapshot option to disable screen capture while keeping ordinary image export.
If an image is missing
In Conversation ready, expand Missing image details to see the reason for each missing image. Click Copy image diagnostics to copy a support report. It lists image numbers, results, failure categories, and retry counts; it does not include conversation text, image contents, or URLs. Attempt counts cover preparation, while the final image list covers your selected export. A recorded failure may have recovered on a later attempt: the final result for each image tells you whether it was included.
Temporary failures are retried within safety limits. If an image stays covered, dismiss overlapping panels; if it is clipped, enlarge the window; if it is still loading or moving, wait until the answer settles and retry. An actual tab switch and a changed conversation are reported separately.
Pictures arranged in a row
When adjacent pictures are visibly arranged side by side in the conversation, version 1.0.9 keeps them in one row in preview and PDF. Their left-to-right order and relative widths are preserved, scaled to fit your page. Each picture keeps its proportions and caption. No extra setting is needed. Separate pictures and pictures separated by text remain separate. If the page does not expose a measurable row, pictures keep the standard individual layout.
Paper dimensions differ from the browser window, so exact pixel-for-pixel matching is not guaranteed. Original images can show more than cropped chat thumbnails; snapshot images retain the captured view. Landscape orientation can make a wide row easier to read.
Full image versus square chat preview
A small square in the chat can be a cropped display of a larger image. When original pixels are readable, the exporter uses the full image and its proportions. A snapshot fallback includes only the displayed view and resolution. When the page exposes an accessible original or larger image source, the extension prefers it. It does not click the attachment or navigate away from your conversation.
If a preferred larger source fails but an available preview can be captured, the document includes that preview and a quality note. If capture fails altogether, an Image unavailable placeholder identifies the missing image.
| Image quality | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Original / high | Detailed diagrams and images containing small text. Images are normalized to PNG, with a maximum long edge of 6,000 pixels. This is not a byte-for-byte copy of the original file. |
| Balanced | The default for most exports. Images use WebP with a maximum long edge of 2,400 pixels. |
| Smaller PDF | A smaller file when fine image detail matters less. Images use more compressed WebP with a maximum long edge of 1,200 pixels. |
Images are scaled down when needed; selecting a higher setting cannot recreate pixels that are absent from a thumbnail. Full resolution depends on what the page exposes and what can be read. Very large, unsupported, or inaccessible images are reported.
For a question pasted as an image: let the picture load, leave Images enabled, select Original / high, and inspect the entire image in Chrome’s final preview before saving.
08 · Document details
Open Document details and advanced options to choose what appears in the PDF.
| Option | Effect |
|---|---|
| Conversation title | Adds the conversation title at the start. |
| Source URL | Adds a link to the original chat. Recipients still need permission to view that conversation; a PDF link does not make a private chat public. |
| Export date/time | Shows when the export was prepared. |
| Message timestamps | Includes timestamps where the conversation page exposes them. |
| Speaker labels | Identifies your messages and the assistant’s messages. |
| Table of contents | Builds a linked contents list from captured headings. It does not guarantee a PDF viewer’s bookmark outline. |
| Hyperlinks | Preserves supported links in the document. |
| Page numbers | Shows page number and total in Chrome’s native print preview and output. |
| Page header / Page footer | Enable these to show the corresponding custom text. If empty, the header uses the title and the footer uses “ChatGPT conversation.” |
| Author (displayed in document) | Adds visible author attribution. This does not set a guaranteed PDF Author metadata field. |
| Privacy-safe diagnostics | Enables limited stage, count, and timing logs. It does not record conversation text. |
Filename template
Combine normal text with {service}, {title}, {date}, and {time}. For example:
{service} - {title} - {date}The extension uses the resulting title to suggest a filename. Chrome controls the save dialog; confirm or edit the filename there. Unsafe filename characters are cleaned automatically.
09 · Defaults and profiles
Built-in starting points
The Export profile menu offers quick combinations. Presets change selected settings rather than resetting every option.
- Technical: Compact, A4, table of contents enabled, 8 pt code.
- Reading: Clean Document, 13 pt body text, wide margins.
- Archive: Clean Document, source link, export date, timestamps, and page numbers enabled.
Save defaults
Click the extension icon, then Settings. Choose your settings and click Save defaults. Export options are also remembered when you prepare an export.
Create and reuse your own profile
- Open Settings and choose the options you want.
- In Saved profiles, enter a name and click Save current profile.
- To reuse it, click Load next to its name, then Save defaults to apply it.
- Use Delete to remove an individual profile.
Saving with an existing profile name updates that profile. You can keep up to 20 profiles. Reset to defaults restores the standard settings; saved profiles are managed separately.
10 · Preview and save
The extension preview is a continuous paper-width document. Scrolling through it is not the same as counting printed pages. Use Print / Save PDF to open Chrome’s authoritative print preview.
- Choose the Save as PDF destination.
- Match the paper size and orientation to your export choices.
- Start with default scale (100% if shown) and default margins so the document’s print layout can apply.
- Turn off Chrome’s own Headers and footers if shown. The extension’s enabled header, footer, and page numbers are part of its document layout.
- Enable Background graphics if you want shaded code and table styling preserved where Chrome makes that option available.
- Inspect the beginning, middle, and end; look at wide formulas, code, tables, and attachments.
- Click Save and choose the location.
Canceling Chrome’s print dialog does not create a PDF. You can print again from the same prepared preview or use Close preview. Once the preview has finished receiving and rendering the document, it no longer needs the source chat for that export. Reopening an old preview URL after closing it does not recreate the document; start a new export from the chat.
When sharing a PDF, check whether you want the source URL, author attribution, or any private conversation content included. These are document choices you control.
11 · Privacy and permissions
Conversation extraction and PDF preparation run locally in your browser. The extension has no additional account system, analytics, advertising, payment service, or remote PDF rendering service in version 1.
- ChatGPT site access allows the export controls and reading the conversation you request.
- Temporary active-tab access enables local map and photo snapshots after a toolbar click or extension shortcut. Full viewport pixels are briefly held in worker memory; only the requested crop is returned to the export. No screenshots are uploaded or stored in extension storage.
- Local storage remembers preferences and profiles. Conversation content is not saved in extension storage.
- Images may be read from loaded pixels or fetched from their existing ChatGPT or official asset sources. They are not uploaded to a separate service.
- Prepared content is held in memory. Closing the preview releases its document memory. Unused prepared exports expire; browser and operating-system recovery behavior is outside the extension’s control.
- Saved PDFs remain in the folder you choose. Uninstalling the extension does not delete those files.
Copy diagnostics supplies counts, categories, stages, and loading measurements. It excludes message text, titles, and signed image URLs. Your ChatGPT account and its own service behavior are separate from the extension.
